If you've watched any sci-fi movie, you probably understand the perceived dangers of cyberattacks and cyber security breaches of some sort. it is a common and frequently exploited plot mechanism. How does the bad guy (or good guy) get a hold of the information they need? They hack into something to get hold of it! Cue tense keyboard scene and a "rapid typing.mp3" sound effect... But how do they easily get this access? More often than not, everyday human error is what poses the most dangerous threat to these companies' cyber security.

Don't believe me? Well then, let's take a quick look.

                          1. Password Habits

An organization can have the most robust security software in the world, but human errors like password sharing can lead to massive data breaches for a lifetime. If one of your employees is involved in a data breach and they happen to use the same password across all their accounts, that could give cybercriminals access to your whole network of data and that can do a great deal of damage, such as the hackers committing identity theft, or stealing money and sensitive information from your place of work.

                          2. Phishing Emails

You do a great job protecting your workplace with locks on the doors, cameras keeping an eye on inventory, and background checks on your employees - but you may have given little thought to training your staff to recognize a phishing email and deal with it appropriately. If just one person isn't paying enough attention to their email and falls for a phishing scam, it could expose your company to a data breach or ransomware attack. Something like that could shut down your company for days or even weeks. Think about how much that could cost you in revenue and reputation.

                          3. Personal Information and Social Media

A less than thought out photo posted to social media with a company's personal identifiable information or an employee's personal health information visible in the frame could lead to a data breach. When employees release this essential and confidential information to the public, your company's security could be at risk and is more prone to online scammers and criminal activities. You don't want a poorly timed selfie to be the reason you have to deal with an onslaught of lawsuits.

                          4. Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

Something as simple as a lost phone or a download with hidden malware could be fatal if employees used their personal phones for work. Your employees use their devices to download all sorts of information and may not be careful about separating and securing valuable company data from everything else. They could end up passing a virus right into your company network the next time they log in and a hacker could use that hardware to break into your integral systems that hold employee and customer data.
